You will learn through a mixture of lectures and practical work experience. You will also be required to complete a considerable amount of private study in order to complete national assignments. Work experience plays an important role in this course and five days each fortnight are spent in settings which care for young children. These include working in nursery units, day nurseries and infant schools.
Assessment is continuous for the duration of the course through the completion of a multiple choice question paper, national assignments and externally assessed tasks. In addition practical skills will be assessed in each of the practical training placements.
Employment may be found in a wide range of settings including private families, nurseries, infant schools, special schools, family centres and summer and winter holiday resorts. The Level 3 Diploma may also be used for progressing into teaching and degrees in early childhood studies. Social work is another option.
You will need to have appropriate clothing and footwear for your work in your training placements. Travel to work placements, textbooks and computer storage devices will incur additional costs. There will also be a further charge for an Independent Safeguarding Authority Certificate (formerly Criminal Records Bureau check), which is mandatory.
